Starting in 8.5.1 (and written here), the functionality of Spell Checker has changed where it's uniformed across Lotus Notes, Sametime and Lotus Symphony in one Spell Checker engine.

In addition with this new functionality, additional Spell Checker languages are available as UpdateSite_xx.zip (where 'xx' is the language code), whereas as the "Legacy Spell Checker" feature still utilizes .dic files.

The question is now... how to allow your users to install the new Spell Checker engines? There are a lot of options possible, but because of the reason that we are Lotus Domino Administrators we will use the eclipse update site which will allow our users to use a menu ("File -> Applications -> Install -> search for new features to install") in the Lotus Notes client to install the engines. Or would you like to brother with fileshares? ;-)

This short how to explains you how to build a eclipse update site (to install all kind or Lotus Notes updates and plugins, not only the dictionaries) and add it to your environment to allow your users to install the new spell checker engines.

Please note:

This how to doesn´t explain how to lock the Lotus Notes Client so that only one eclipse update site could be used. For these please read the IBM Administrator Documentation.

Preparing files:

  1. Log into the Passport Advantage Website.
  2. Search by one or more of the following part numbers below (depending on your OS version):

    Product
    Operating System
    Part Number
IBM Lotus Notes XTAF Dictionaries 8.5.1 Win, Linux ML Windows
    Linux
    CZHE3ML
IBM Lotus Notes XTAF Dictionaries 8.5.1 Mac ML Macintosh OS X CZHE4ML
  3. Once you have downloaded the .ZIP file available on Passport Advantage, and extracted the zip file (which contains all the languages, but not the individual UpdateSite_xx.zip)

Create an "Eclipse Update Site":

Now create an Eclipse update side on your server from the Eclipse Update site template.

Create Eclipse Update Site

After creating this application please change the ACL from it. It is a good idea to give all users (-default-) read access to this application.

Build the link:

1.) after you created the eclipse update site open the application/database properties and switch to the information section.

Get the replica ID

2.) copy the replica ID to a text editor (without the ":" character)

3.) now build a link similar like the following:

NRPC://domino01/__C125742500705A55/site.xml

Note the use of the double underscore and replica ID in the NRPC protocol.

Note:

You need to change the replica AND the servername name so that it match to your environment.

Adding the update site to your server:

1.) Now open the server configuration document for the home/mail server from your users and switch into the edit mode for this config document.

2.) go to the "Client Update -> Provisioning Section"

3.) Enable provisioning (marked as 1)

4.) Click on new and add (marked as 2) the link you build into the dialog box. You could change the name into something else if you didn´t wish to use my default one.

Adding update site to server document

5.) After adding the link press on ok, and enable the update site.

Enable the update site.

Add XTAF Dictionaries:

Now you could open your Eclipse update site on your server (the NSF file you created) and add the needed dictionaries (or other features) to it.

load the BlackBerryServer.mib in the MIB Browser

Desktop Policy:

Do not forget to allow your users to to initiate updates. This could be found on the desktop policy on the basic settings. There is a "Provision" section on it. You need to change the "Allow user to do user initiated updates" to enabled. By default, the Allow user initiated updates field is Disabled and therefore the Eclipse update manager in the client is not enabled.

Testing:

If everything is configured correctly you need to wait until your Lotus Notes Client authenticated with your home mail server. Then the configuration will be downloaded and you could use the option:

"File -> Applications -> Install -> search for new features to install"

To install the dictionaries.

Notes:

1.) Replicate your Update Site

If you have multiple server you could replicate your eclipse update site to every server. But in that case it is a good idea to change the link on every configuration document and point it to the local server.

2.) Legacy Spell Checker Dictionaries:

For the Legacy Spell Checker functionality, additional languages are also available, and can be downloaded from Passport Advantage using one (or more) of the following part numbers depending on the Operating System used:

Product
Operating System
Part Number
IBM Lotus Notes Dictionaries 8.5.1 Win ML

(Dictionaries.zip W32)
Windows CZA47ML
IBM Lotus Notes Dictionaries 8.5.1 Linux ML Linux CZA48ML
