Detailed information for the notes.ini Keyword:

DEBUG_CONSOLE_MSG

Short Description: Can be used to monitor for low memory conditions and run a memory dump automatically

Description:

When debugging low memory conditions on an i5/OS® system, it can sometimes be a challenge for the administrator to run memory dumps at the time the errors are first encountered, as these may occur during less busy times or at night.

Apart from the previously documented method of running a Program document, is there another way to monitor for low memory conditions and run a memory dump automatically?

Answer

The following notes.ini variable can be used to accomplish this:
DEBUG_CONSOLE_MSG=-2,INSUFFICIENT MEMORY,SHOW MEM DUMP,x

where:
"-2" runs a console command (Ensure this is entered as a negative number)

"INSUFFICIENT MEMORY" is the console message to watch for, as an example.

"SHOW MEM DUMP" is the console command to run, for instance.

"x" is a number, indicating that the previous command specified (e.g. "SHOW MEM DUMP") be run the first 'x' times the console message (e.g. "INSUFFICIENT MEMORY") is seen.

Default value:
None

Syntax:
DEBUG_CONSOLE_MSG=string

Example:
DEBUG_CONSOLE_MSG=-2,INSUFFICIENT MEMORY,SHOW MEM DUMP,x
